- MAAP shortlisted for 2021 Wolfson Prize | MAAP Architects
MAAP, in collaboration with Andy Black, Anthony Farnsworth, and Fleet Architects, have been shortlisted for the 2021 Wolfson Economics Prize. 13 October 2021 MAAP shortlisted for 2021 Wolfson Prize MAAP, in collaboration with Andy Black, Anthony Farnsworth, and Fleet Architects, have been shortlisted for the 2021 Wolfson Economics Prize. The prize question for 2021 is "how would you design and plan new hospitals to radically improve patient experiences, clinical outcomes, staff wellbeing and integration with wider health and social care?" Our team's entry, The Well Placed Hospital, puts the case for moving future acute hospitals back into their town centres in order to make them smaller, more convivial and better integrated with civic life and the other elements of health and social care. From the Essay Bringing the hospital into the town centre benefits both the town and the hospital. We have looked at the available data and of the 268 NhS hospitals in England, perhaps only 30 are within 10 minutes of their town centre. Six towns with different histories and geographies that could be potential candidates for reintegration are reviewed to illustrate the social and economic benefits that might accrue and test the wider efficacy. The invigoration of the town economy, a reduction in car journeys, the potential to exploit existing and vacant space and superior future flexibility. (In contrast to the continued (over)development of crowded hospital campus sites.) One of these towns (Barnstaple) was selected for the detailed case study that forms the centrepiece of this submission. an all new acute hospital under three roofs is shown on a riverside site flanked by a new Post-acute unit, a dementia/mental health unit and a ‘Wellness hotel’. The total pool of available beds and places is increased, but total revenue costs are not. The use of the acute hospital to accommodate patients not needing or benefiting from acute medical care is expensive and therapeutically negative. The new hospital is smaller, with 100% single rooms, but has the same acute treatment facilities and capacity as the existing sprawling district General hospital (dGh). Submissions have been reviewed by a panel of six judges. The finalists have a month to further develop their submissions before the judges select the eventual winner of the £250,000 Prize. Ipswich Hospital Redevelopment Jacaranda Place Clock View Glenside Health Campus See All › Related Projects MAAP worked as part of a team led by multi-disciplinary consultancy Jacobs bringing our mental health planning expertise to the redevelopment proposals. MAAP led stakeholder engagement and prepared the concept and schematic design for the mental health building which is now on site with documentation being completed by Hassell. The 8,000 sqm multi-storey mental health facility provides two 14 bed adult wards, one 14 bed older persons ward, and one 8 bed high dependency unit. The design incorporates future-proofing strategies to allow the hospital to convert admin space to provide an additional IPU at a future date. The scheme arranges public and private areas around a large open-air atrium and clusters patient units around shared courtyards. The building form harness the tropical climate drawing airflow through courtyards and the atrium for natural ventilation and day-lighting, with bedrooms oriented to provide pleasant outlooks suited to healing and recovery.

Shoalhaven Hospital Multi-Deck Carpark The Shoalhaven Hospital Multideck carpark features a stunning facade inspired by the colours and landscape art of Shoalhaven luminary Arthur Boyd. The carpark provides over 300 much needed new carparking spaces whilst visually integrating into the hospital's masterplan. NSW MBA Award Committee Shoalhaven Hospital Multi-Deck Carpark The Prince Charles Hospital Glenside Health Campus See All › Related Projects The design acknowledges that the hospital site is densely developed with most parts of the site occupied by either clinical or support infrastructure (including car parking) and that hospital expansion requires additional land. Our initial 2017 masterplan was prepared in 2016-17 to establish a framework for future expansion taking into consideration the requirements of ISLHD’s Clinical Service Plan to 2027. This was updated in 2019 to take into consideration an extended planning horizon and revised development boundaries. The first stage of the redevelopment comprises MAAP’s design for a new 220 space multideck car park which has has been planned to integrate with future clinical buildings as part of the coordinated masterplan. The car park opened in December 2019 winning the NSW MBA Award for best public building in 2020. Awards 2020 Best Public Building $10m - $15m NSW MBA Awards

- Alexandria Health Centre shortlisted at World Architecture Festival Awards | MAAP Architects
MAAP are pleased to announce that Alexandria Health Centre has been shortlisted at in the 2023 World Architecture Festival Awards. 18 July 2023 Alexandria Health Centre shortlisted at World Architecture Festival Awards MAAP are pleased to announce that Alexandria Health Centre has been shortlisted at in the 2023 World Architecture Festival Awards. Alexandria Health Centre, designed in collaboration with Warren and Mahoney Architects, has been nominated in the Future Health category for buildings still in design - a resounding endorsement of the team's vision for the project. The facility aims to raise awareness, promote acceptance, offer support, and aid in recovery and healing. To achieve this goal, the project has identified four key design drivers: sound clinical planning; an elevated customer experience; a considered urban response; and embedding a connection to country and Indigenous concepts of wellness. Early engagement with Indigenous practitioners has helped to embed Indigenous values and stories into the project, connecting to place and helping to reconnect consumers to country. The building takes inspiration from the bamuru (kangaroo grass), with its soft curves and rich color. The plant provided sustenance for early communities and was integral in the regeneration of native creeks. The project draws metaphorical inspiration from this power of resurfacing knowledge and identity to create wellbeing. The materiality and composition of the façade utilizes natural materials that reference the urban fabric and have been chosen throughout to ensure the building responds to its local context. The project places functionality, equality, and dignity for all people at the forefront of its design. Soft edges, a strong connection to nature, clear and accessible circulation and warm materiality create an environment that will be calming and comfortable to return to over time – creating a positive experience to embark on their healing journey. Embedded through architecture, this project is committed to exceptional sustainability performance, with a particular focus on reducing built area, passive design strategies, connection to nature, and design for health and wellbeing.
